Volvo Trucks has announced a series of aerodynamic improvements to its heavy-duty trucks, applying techniques already established in the aerospace industry. The update comes with the Volvo FH Aero model, now even more efficient in terms of fuel consumption and emissions.

The Swedish manufacturer — recently awarded the Green Truck Award 2025 — introduced airflow stabilizers on the upper corners of the cab, extended deflectors, and redesigned chassis fairings. Combined, these modifications can lead to up to 7% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the traditional Volvo FH.

“All the time spent in simulations and wind tunnel testing was worth it,” says Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks. “These changes complement the advancements introduced last year.”

Precision aerodynamics: from aviation to asphalt

The new stabilizers are inspired by concepts used in aircraft, Formula 1, and wind turbines. With a pattern of small oblique fins, they redirect air at the upper cab corners, significantly reducing frontal drag.

“We thought outside the box,” says Anders Tenstam, Aerodynamics Specialist. “We used micro-elements to create a large-scale aerodynamic impact, paving the way for future solutions.”

The technology is complemented by:

  • Air deflectors extended by 50 mm, reducing the gap between cab and trailer.
  • Optimized chassis fairings, better aligned with the rear mudguard.

This combination of three elements follows the principle “1 + 1 = 3”, indicating that the integrated benefits exceed the individual sum of each component.

Availability and compatibility

The new improvements are available for Volvo FH, FH Aero, and FM models, and can be applied to electric, gas, and diesel trucks. However, the airflow stabilizers are exclusive to the FH and FH Aero models.

With a cab extended by 24 cm and precision optimizations, the Volvo FH Aero reinforces Volvo Trucks’ leadership in energy efficiency and sustainable design for long-haul transportation.
